Scope and Sequence Social Studies

"Explore Our World"

The sixth grade social studies course is a study of world cultures.  Our theme this year is "Explore Our World" and our study will be comprised of several small thematic units. The eight strands of social studies are history, geography, economics, government, culture, citizenship, skills, and science, technology and society.

FIRST NINE WEEKS

 

          Unit 1 CARAVANS

        The theme of the Caravan unit is geography review and an introduction to cultures and regions of the world.  The students work in groups traveling around the world collecting artifacts by completing the required thematic assignments. (length of time-4-5 weeks
 

                               Unit 2-THE ANCIENTS
    
The theme of "The Ancients" unit is the examination of various ancient cultures for the purpose of analyzing their lasting contributions.  The ancient cultural regions we will examine are;  Mesopotamia, Egypt, Mayans, Aztecs, Greece, Rome, and China. The unit will culminate with short presentations on each culture.  (length of time-4-5 weeks)

                                        
SECOND NINE WEEKS

                         Unit 3- COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENTS
     The theme of the comparative governments unit is to analyze the various types of governments through simulations and role play.  The students work in groups and take on the role of citizens under various types of governments.  The groups will compare and contrast their form of government with those of the other groups. We will also incorporate a focus on elections within this unit.
