Welcome!

We are very excited to have you here at Turner Middle School.  We are equally excited to welcome you to the “Language Arts Surf”.  In the following handout, you will find information that we hope will be conducive to you as we team together to “Dive into Learning”.

 Course Overview

Our goal is to enhance grammar/spelling usage and writing skills, as well as increasing the knowledge of various literary genres while reinforcing the Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS) and Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) objectives.

 Curriculum

The Language Arts Department has blocked scheduling.  This means that instead of a separate Language Arts class and a separate reading class, they are together.  The Language Arts block is approximately an hour and a half.

 Evaluation

          * Homework assignments:  You will have frequent assignments involving course material.

* Class Participation:  You are required to take an active part in class discussions.

* In-Class Quizzes:  Announced and Unannounced quizzes are on an irregular basis.

* Tests:  Test dates are given in class prior to the test.

* Throughout the year there will be various special projects assigned.

* Complete all assignments.   After the day an assignment is due the student will have a five school day grace-period.  If the student turns the assignment in one to two days after the assignment is due the best grade they can make is a 70.  The best grade a student can make on the third, fourth or fifth school day after the assignment is due is a 50.  After the five school day grace-period is up the student will make a zero on the assignment.  In the event of an absence, the student has the number of days absent to complete their assignments.  In the event of an absence, the student has the number of days absent to complete their assignments.  It is the student’s responsibility to get their missed assignments.

Due to department policy, No extra-credit will be assigned.

Textbooks/Book Checks

You will receive two (2) textbooks, one for Language Arts and one for Reading.  Once issued, these books stay at home for you to do assignments.  There will be a classroom set used during the school day.

Students will have to bring their books occasionally for book checks.  Book checks are announced in advance so that the students can be prepared.

If for some reason the textbooks are lost or damaged, they are to be purchased.  Since they are so expensive, we ask that you please try to keep up with them.  If you withdraw from Turner you must return all books at the time of withdrawal.

 Grading Policy

     Course grades are as follows:

A:  100 – 90 %            B:  89 – 80 %               C:  79 – 70 %              F:  69 % and below

Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of zero (0) for that class assignment.

Classroom/Campus Behavior

You are to maintain self-discipline at all times.  Violators of school/classroom rules are punished accordingly.  Additionally, you are to adhere to all campus and district rules.  These rules are on page 7 of the Student Handbook.

Conferences

We welcome scheduled parent conferences.  Conferences are before and after school or during the teacher’s conference period.  You may call the office at 972-923-4690 to schedule a parent conference.  Additionally, you can contact any of us through e-mail.  Our individual e-mail addresses can be located at our campus web site:  www.tms.wisd.org
